Real Name Domain Names

June 14th, 2007 by alli

The number of people who have domains under their own name amazes me. There’s not even the need to Google them. Just type in their full name, add a .com and there you have it. No effort required (save the typing, if you type real slow).

From what I’ve observed so far, the people (normal people, no celebrities) likely to have domains under their own names are creative types, namely writers or artists. They don’t necessarily have to make their living in the craft they love. So long as they practice it or cherish the art, that’s enough for them to start up a site. Of course it helps if they have something to showcase, such as a portfolio or resume.

I understand having a portfolio; it’s actually the part of the site I look at first. The resume, though, I’m on the fence about putting your work history out there in the open like that. If you’re applying for a job and you refer your potential employer to your site, they probably already have your resume. If you’re freelancing, your portfolio should be enough to give a gist if you’re the right fit to whoever’s looking. If they’re really interested, then they’d request for an updated resume. Either way, an online resume is a nice thought but I don’t think it’d be enough to draw out a direct job offer. It’d be uber useful for fanboys/fangirls, though.

As for getting one myself, I don’t think I’d want a real name domain name. Not yet, anyway. Not appealing enough. I think domain names should be fun and descriptive of the site. Names kind of suggest the site is all about the person, i.e. bios and pics. See any pics of me here? I don’t think so. See a decent bio? Not even. Portfolio? Nah.

I guess I don’t deserve a real name domain name just yet. But I’m thinking about it.
